this is the website of ada adhiyatma sometimes known as MADAM DATA or min planck, stunt clarinetist in OOLOI, SOUR DATA, and SPACE FUCK, composer of ELECTRONIC MUSIC, half of small-fontsize improv duo PLACE, PODCAST creator, hardware HACKER, designer of COMPUTER INSTRUMENTS and KLUDGE artist.

biography / biology / biometrics / biofeedback / bio

Ada Adhiyatma is a musician who explores machine interfaces and the embodied idea of distance. Working with handmade computer programs, field recordings and old samplers, they fantasize about sound as a way to echolocate spaces defined by separations, the trauma of dislocation, the impossibility of empathy. Ada's performance personas in Philadelphia include the apocalyptic insect noise purveyor Madam Data, and various component identities of sci fi noise-thrash quintet OOLOI and the environmental improvisation duo 'place'. They also produce a podcast of discarded sound called The Floating World.

Ada's pronouns are they / them / theirs and they sit at the crossroads of certain disabilities and certain queernesses, often unsure what they're doing there.

notable sound and art things I have done recently:

"Biological Time", installation at ACRE Projects in Chicago.
Description: root variant: a clock that only ticks when you are near it. 1st variation: composition for guitar, reflector 6 and operator.

"Hold yourself", performance at Glitter Galaxy in West Philadelphia.
Description: audience is invited to still their bodies through mindfulness, slowly increasing the pressure of stillness, then are blasted with high-volume computer noise for ~12 minutes.

"Nerve Map", album released on the internet by the label media_rins.
Description: for 6 months I recorded some stuff every day and kept it. I took those hundreds of hours of recordings and threw out all the stuff I didn't like, and these tracks were what was left. They are very small.

"The Floating World", podcast available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Podbean etc.
Description: each episode of the floating world is bricolaged together from bits of audio junk sent over from all corners of the world. The result is a pulsating mechanical unconsciousness: a love letter to the sleeping city and all its machinery, and to the bodies that manifest its conscience and brutality.

some instruments I have designed and built

Reflector 8
Phase-feedback instrument built around a 'scrubbing' mechanism that converts trackpad / mouse inputs into very high pitched glitch impulses.

Reflector 7
Computer model of a no-input mixer with reverb, tremolo and delay in the feedback loop.

Reflector 5
5-oscillator phase-feedback network for maximum chaos, based on Martin Brinkmann's 'chaosmonster' series.

Asterism
Modular synthesizer, sequencer and sampler environment for Pure Data

press quotes

"The album murmurs and stirs in intense ambient spaces; this is no Brian Eno trying to make pretty background music for [insert location or medium here], it's more akin to early Juliana Barwick [...] using sound to capture feeling." -John Vettese, The Key WXPN, writing about "a thick band of orange light (2018)"

"This music will untether you from space and time. Your body will transcend its fleshy corners and radiate dance energy outward in directions perpendicular to human understanding." -The Schwenk

"Before listening to Madam Data I was very broke. Now I am wealthy. Thank you, Madam Data!" -frnkhues
